Workshop on Advanced Protein Engineering Techniques & 3rd P-CUBE User Meeting

Heidelberg, 22-24 October 2012, P-CUBE event

Organisers: Christoph Müller, Edward Lemke, Maja Köhn, Laura Minnich and Petra Lindemann (all EMBL Heidelberg)

Beautiful autumn weather welcomed around 40 scientists including P-CUBE partners and users who attended the 3rd P-CUBE User Meeting (22 Oct 2012) at EMBL Heidelberg, Germany. The meeting started with a fascinating keynote lecture from Stefan Knapp (Oxford University) on the development of selective chemical ligands by family-wide structural analysis of human proteins. The P-CUBE platform operators presented the numerous scientific services offered for transnational access (Protein Expression in Bacterial & Eukaryotic Cells, MultiBac, ESPRIT, DARPins, High-throughput Crystallization, Advanced Microscopy) and gave a summary on the large number of completed and successful user projects. The high quality of supported research projects was nicely demonstrated in the exciting presentations given by former P-CUBE users.

Subsequent to the P-CUBE User Meeting, PhD students and Postdocs from 11 countries (France, UK, Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Romania, Croatia, Poland, Czech republic, Switzerland and Australia) participated in a Workshop on Advanced Protein Engineering Techniques (23-24 October 2012).

The course was taught in small groups and consisted of excellent lectures and hands-on practical sessions on genetically encoding unnatural amino acids via amber suppression for site-specific protein engineering and advanced protein engineering with intein technology.

The workshop participants particularly enjoyed the close interaction with the lecturers and tutors (Edward Lemke (EMBL Heidelberg), Luc Brunsveld (TU Eindhoven), Daniel Summerer (University Konstanz), Maja Köhn (EMBL Heidelberg), Henning Mootz (University Muenster), Christine Koehler (EMBL Heidelberg), Swati Tyagi (EMBL Heidelberg), Annika Borrmann (Radboud University, Nijmegen) and Pablo Rios (EMBL Heidelberg)) as well as the hands-on training in the practicals.

Presentations from the P-CUBE User Meeting and Workshop are available for registered P-CUBE users.
